Shiva Boys' Hindu College
Symbolic Blowing of the Shankh
Kishore Sookoo • 12 September, 2025
The symbolic blowing of the shankh by five of our students on Tuesday 9th September, 2025 represented a re-enactment of what happened 25 years ago on September 4th, 2000 when Pundit Ashram Maharaj blew the shankh to call students to the assembly on that historic day which was the first day of classes at this most noble institution. It must have been set up through some divine intervention surely, owing to the fact that there was no available bell at the time to be rung , and the shankh, which is blown during prayers to signify the start of auspicious events and to purify the environment, was used to signal the beginning of "Shiva Boys' Hindu College."
It was truly a special moment for everyone present at our school's assembly on Tuesday this week. Nostalgia must have been coursing through the veins of several members of staff especially Pundit Rickie Maharaj (current Vice Principal), Mr. Shane Lutchman (current Dean) and Mrs. Atri Labban (current Head of Department-Mathematics and Science) who were privileged to be present on the very first day of school 25 years ago.
It is quite interesting as well that Shiva Boys' Hindu College was officially opened on September 9th, 2000 by the Prime Minister, The Honourable Mrs. Kamla Persad-Bissessar, who was at that time the Minister of Education and the Acting Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago.
It must be mentioned too that everything seems to be shaping up beautifully so far as Shiva Boys' Hindu College plans to celebrate its 25th anniversary in grand fashion on October 10th, 2025 with a Ramayana Yagna right here at school.
